Fire breaks out at Mandarin Oriental Knightsbridge

Mandarin Oriental Knightsbridge

Around 120 firefighters were called to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge, London on Wednesday after a fire broke out at the property.

Images and video on Twitter showed a huge plume of black smoke billowing from the roof of the hotel in William Street near Hyde Park.

According to the London Fire Brigade, it is believed the fire spread quickly across a "vertical facade for plants and vegetation and into several floors of the hotel". The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

The fire was brought under control by about 2200. There were no reports of injuries and all guests and members of staff were successfully evacuated, according to the fire brigade.

The world-famous hotel is home to a spa, restaurants and 168 rooms and suites. The hotel has just finished an extensive, 18-month refurbishment project, which reportedly cost around £85 million.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group released a statement last night thanking those on social media for the words of "concern about this sad incident".

It said it was too early to determine "the full extent of the damage" and that an investigation is under way but will "take time to complete". The group will issue updates when appropriate.
