Car-sharing network Zipcar has expanded its ‘floating’ rental service Zipcar Flex to eight London boroughs, allowing the programme to reach 3.4 million residents.
The service, which initially launched in the boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Merton, is now also available in Islington, Hackney, Lewisham and Waltham Forest. Zipcar says it is working with more boroughs to expand the programme further and make it more widely available in the capital.
Zipcar Flex allows members to pick up a car from a designated spot and drop it off at any other available designated spot within the ‘Zipzone’. Rates start from 29p per minute and include the Congestion Charge, petrol and insurance, according to Zipcar, which is owned by Avis Budget Group.
Zipcar claims the service can save users around half compared to ride-hailing apps and could be considered more efficient than taxis because the cars travel point to point without the need to drive around waiting for a new fare.
