Heathrow continues ‘busiest January’ trend

Heathrow arrivals

Heathrow is the latest airport to report its ‘busiest-ever’ January, with passenger numbers up 1.1 per cent  to 5.8 million.

The airport says its 15th consecutive record month was driven by domestic flights, with UK services up 6.9 per cent following an increased uptake in Flybe’s offering. Meanwhile, South Asia and Latin America saw the biggest long-haul increases at 11.3 and 6.9 per cent respectively.

Cargo travelling through Heathrow grew 10.6 per cent to 133,000 tonnes. Top freight destinations included the US, Spain and China.

John Holland-Kaye, CEO of Heathrow airport, said: “Heathrow is off to a flying start, with record passenger numbers and cargo volumes and the start of our public consultation on the third runway. Heathrow expansion will provide the global trading routes to super-charge Britain’s economy as we leave the EU.”

Gatwick airport also recorded its busiest January, with passenger numbers up 1.4 per cent.
