Ryanair has announced that it has contacted 315,000 passengers affected by cancellations over the next six weeks with offers of alternative flights or refunds.

Amid widespread criticism of its decision to cancel two per cent of flights to protect its target punctuality, Ryanair says it expects to re-accommodate more than 175,000 – around 55 per cent of – customers, with another 63,000 predicted to accept refunds and compensation under EU regulation.

The airline also reports it has taken on extra customer service staff “to speed up the rate at which we accommodate and action alternative flight requests or refund applications”, according to chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs. It expects to have processed more than 300,000 requests by the end of this week.
