Business Travel Awards: Winner’s story – Hertz

As entries open for the 2016 Business Travel Awards, BBT has been catching up with some of last year’s winners to highlight their stories and find out how the win has boosted their business.

In the first instalment of this mini-series, BBT speaks to Mark Tristram-Walmsley, senior director sales for northern Europe for Hertz which won the Best Car Rental Company at this year’s awards.

Why did you decide to enter the 2015 Business Travel Awards?
Hertz enters the awards that we believe enhance the reputation of our business. The Business Travel Awards are taken seriously by corporate travel managers and offer a thorough evaluation of the car rental sector in terms of service delivery to the corporate traveller.

What did winning the award for Best Car Rental Company mean to your team?
Winning the award for Best Car Rental Company adds to our reputation in the trade, as one of the world’s leading providers of car rental for travellers across the globe. Our staff works hard to deliver top customer experience and achieving independent recognition of their efforts is profoundly rewarding.

The judges were particularly impressed with your web-based booking tool – what benefits does it offer to travel managers?
Hertz has spent a considerable amount of time and effort developing a web-based booking tool, which is able to meet the needs of our diverse customer base. The tool is flexible and easily customisable in order to add value to our customers and partners. It provides simple and effective access to car rental booking for travellers, bookers and travel managers alike. It also captures and delivers the information the client requires without having to make significant investment themselves.

Has winning the award had any positive benefits for your company – both internally and externally?
The internal benefit is undoubtedly the morale boost from having been recognised as the best at what we do. Staff are proud and pleased to have been voted as being the best by such influential and experienced buyers. Externally, we included the news in all our customer-facing communication, proposals to win new business and issued a press release. We believe this award will act as an endorsement by BBT and will have a positive impact on our business.

What’s in the pipeline for Hertz in 2016?
We have so much going on, but it will have to stay under wraps for now. This includes some new technology that we look forward to including in our 2016 awards submission.

What did you enjoy most – apart from winning – about the awards evening?
Winning was a real highlight – not just for the fun on the evening (which was absolutely fantastic), but for all the reasons mentioned so far. It really is a great news story to share with our people, who feel that their efforts are recognised. It is also a great chance to catch up with all our friends and colleagues from other parts of the industry and many customers who also attend the awards.

What the judges said: Hertz’s ongoing ability to constantly review the car rental market and what customers really want, then adapt and innovate accordingly, make the company a worthy winner. The judges were also impressed with their great global reach and excellent CSR record.
