Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 made a rapid descent with no human interaction before crashing into the Indian Ocean, new analysis has suggested.

A report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said satellite data indicated a “high and increasing rate of descent”.

MH370, which disappeared in March 2014 with 239 passengers and crew onboard, is the only Boeing 777 to have disappeared over an ocean.

The report also found the aircraft appeared to be out of control when it disappeared, and analysis of wing flap debris showed the aircraft was not configured for a landing.

Investigators focused their attention on the recovered right outboard wing flap section, among more than 20 items of debris.

“The purpose of the examination was to inform the end-of-flight scenarios being considered by the search team,” the report said.

“The right ‘flaperon’ was probably at, or close to, the neutral position at the time it separated from the wing.”

The release of the report comes as a team of international aviation and communications experts gather in Canberra to discuss the next stage of the search for the plane.
