Rail passengers can now buy ‘advance’ tickets on the day of departure, the Rail Delivery Group has announced.

In a step first taken by Cross Country, passengers of Grand Central, Greater Anglia, Northern, TransPennine Express, Virgin Trains East Coast, Virgin West Coast will be able to purchase the cheaper tickets up until 10 minutes before departure on certain services.

Advance tickets, which were previously available until midnight day before departure, are for a limited number of seats and often sell out before the date of travel.

Jacqueline Starr, Managing Director of Customer Experience at the Rail Delivery Group, said: “Not everyone can plan journeys in advance and now more people can buy cheaper tickets on the day, even on their way to the station. We want customers to get the best possible deal whenever they travel.”

Advance tickets are not being offered on Arriva Trains Wales, South West Trains, Southern, Southeastern, ScotRail or First Great Western.
