British travellers heading to the US have been warned they risk being refused entry unless they have the latest biometric passports.
The US government has introduced the new rules amid fresh concerns over terrorism. It means business and leisure travellers visiting America from a Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) country, including the UK, are required to have an electronic passport – one which has an embedded electronic chip.
“As of 1 April 2016, all travellers must have an e-passport to use the [visa waiver programme],” states the Department of Homeland Security website.
Biometric passports have been issued since spring 2007 and the Home Office stopped issuing old-style travel documents in the autumn of that year.
