Gatwick airport says it has started 2018 with its busiest-ever January, with a 1.4 per cent increase on passenger numbers.
According to the figures, traffic to the US saw the biggest percentage increase, with Fort Lauderdale, Florida being the most popular destination with a 92.6 per cent increase on 2017. New York and Boston were up 51.1 and 31.4 per cent respectively, while California destinations Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles also up.
Elsewhere on Gatwick’s long-haul routes, Hong Kong saw 42.4 per cent growth in passenger numbers.
Domestic routes also performed well, with Newquay up 21.3 per cent, Guernsey up 13 per cent and Glasgow up 9 per cent.
Cargo tonnage travelling through the airport also rose 29.6 per cent.
