BUENOS AIRES is to have a spectacular new steakhouse. Well not actually a new restaurant for eating that most Argentinean of meats, the steak, but a restoration by Orient-Express Hotels of one of the country”s most famous eating places.
The British six star leisure company, owned by Sea Containers Plc, acquired the original La Cabana in June 1996.
Its fabled past included playing host to every Argentine president since Juan P. Justo (circa 1935). Charles de Gaulle, Henry Kissinger, the Aga Khan, Richard Nixon, King Juan Carlos, Maurice Chevalier, Joan Crawford, Arturo Toscanini, Walt Disney and countless others were attracted to La Cabana”s ambiance, privacy and most famous dish, the ”Grand Baby Beef” ” a 4-inch wide 3.3-pound steak like no other in the world.
The new La Cabana opens in September in the fashionable residential La Recoleta area of Buenos Aires, a five minute taxi ride from the central business district. The layout and atmosphere will be similar to the highly successful Orient Express ”21” Club in New York.
