Easyjet has announced expansion plans at Glasgow airport with the introduction of a fifth aircraft based at the Scottish hub, providing an additional 340,000 seats per year.
The new A320 joins an existing Glasgow fleet of two A319s and two other A320s and will help facilitate the launch of flights between the airport and Birmingham from 29 March 2020.
The Birmingham service will operate 13 times per week throughout the year, with tickets due to go on sale in the coming weeks.
Easyjet began services at Glasgow airport in 1995. Today, it has flown more than 34 million passengers to and from the Scottish city, with 294 flights a week across 19 routes, including up to ten services per day to Stansted, Luton and Gatwick.
The low-cost carrier is due to increase its domestic links from Glasgow by more than 5 per cent by the end of 2019.
UK country manager Ali Gayward commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be celebrating our expansion at Glasgow airport. The addition of another aircraft will help us to deliver long term, sustainable growth at the base, providing customers with a greater range of destinations, all with low fares and great service.
“We are also very excited about launching our new route from Glasgow to Birmingham. This will provide even more great value and convenient domestic connectivity for our customers. Easyjet has selected Glasgow as the focus of its growth in Scotland and we are excited about the future at Glasgow.”
Francois Bourienne, CCO of AGS Airports Group, which owns Glasgow airport, added: “Both Easyjet and Glasgow airport have enjoyed a long and productive relationship since the airline’s inaugural flight landed here almost a quarter of a century ago.
“The introduction of Easyjet’s new Birmingham route is also welcome news, as services to England’s second-biggest city continue to be very popular with both our business and leisure customers.”
Easyjet was named Best Short-Haul Airline and Business Airline of the Year at the 2019 Business Travel Awards.
