Luton airport set a new record for traffic during summer 2019 with more than 5.3 million passengers.
The Bedfordshire airport saw passenger traffic rise by 7.3 per cent across June, July and August with Amsterdam being the top destination with 198,000 passengers.
Other destinations in the top 10 included Malaga, Barcelona, Lisbon, Palma and Tel Aviv.
The record-breaking summer comes after Luton was boosted by a new partnership with East Midlands Railway’s operator Abellio to run an express train service to the airport.
Alberto Martin, Luton’s chief executive, said: “The summer period is always a busy time for the airport, and this year was no exception. Our new agreement with Abellio marks a step-change in rail connectivity between London and its fastest-growing airport, and will deliver the improved travel experience which our passengers deserve.”
Luton’s passenger traffic reached 16.6 million in 2018, which was an increase of 5 per cent on the previous year.
